Best Golf Grips for Your Miss: Slice, Hook, or Two-Way

July 13, 2026

Your typical miss is one of the best clues you have about your grip setup. Grip size and taper change how fast your hands rotate through impact, and that rotation is exactly what sends the ball left or right. None of this replaces a lesson, but the right grip stops fighting your hands and starts helping them.

If you slice or push it (ball leaks right)

A slice usually means the face is open at impact and your hands are not releasing in time. The grip mistakes that make it worse are going too big or too thick in the lower hand, both of which slow your hands down. So:

  • Keep a standard taper, which lets the lower hand stay active.
  • Do not upsize past your measured grip size. If anything, make sure you are not already too big.
  • A firm or standard rubber is fine here. Feedback is your friend while you work on releasing the club.

If you hook or pull it (ball dives left)

A hook is the opposite problem: the hands are too active and the face shuts. This is where a slightly larger grip and a reduced taper earn their keep.

  • A reduced-taper grip (the Golf Pride Plus4 line is the obvious example) fills the lower hand and quiets the flip.
  • Sizing up a step, or adding a couple of tape wraps, nudges your hands toward neutral.
  • Lighter grip pressure helps too, and a bigger grip makes that easier.

If you fight a two-way miss

Missing both directions usually points to inconsistency rather than one fixed fault, so the grip goal is a neutral, repeatable setup rather than a correction in either direction. Get the size right first, keep a standard taper, and pick a material that lets you hold the club the same way every time without re-gripping mid-swing. Consistency in the hands tends to quiet a two-way miss faster than any single tweak.

The honest caveat

Grips support a fix, they do not manufacture one. A reduced taper will not cure a hook rooted in your swing path, and a firmer grip will not fix an open face on its own. What the right grip does is remove a variable, so your hands can do their job. Start from your miss, fit to your hands, and let the grip stop working against you.
