How many tape wraps to build up grip size

Extra layers of build-up tape make a grip play thicker. Here's how much each wrap adds, how many equal a half or full size, and where to stop.

New to a term? See the glossary

Build-up tape is the extra layer of double-sided tape wrapped around the shaft before the grip goes on. Each wrap adds a little diameter, so tape lets you fine-tune grip thickness without jumping to the next stock size. It is the cheapest adjustment in the bag and the one most golfers never use.

How much each wrap adds

A single layer of build-up tape adds a small, even amount of diameter along the whole grip. The practical rule most fitters and clubmakers work from:

  • 2 wraps is roughly half a size, for example halfway from standard toward midsize.
  • 4 wraps is roughly a full size, close to moving standard up to midsize.

This is exactly how GripFitr calculates build-up. When your hands land between two sizes, it recommends the nearest stock grip plus a wrap count rather than forcing you into a size that is slightly off.

Where to stop

More tape is not always better. Past about four wraps the grip starts to lose its intended shape and the taper flattens out, so the feel gets muddy. If you need more than a full size of build-up, buy the larger stock size instead and start clean. Think of tape as the tool for the last half-size of adjustment, not for turning a standard grip into a jumbo.

Building the lower hand only

Tape does not have to be even. Wrapping extra layers under the lower hand alone thickens just that section, which reduces taper and quiets an overactive lower hand. This is the do-it-yourself version of a reduced-taper grip. Two to four wraps under the bottom hand mimics what the Golf Pride Plus4 grips do out of the package.

A quick build guide

  1. Strip the old grip and old tape, and clean the shaft.
  2. Lay your base layer of grip tape as normal, then add your build-up wraps: two for a half size, four for a full size.
  3. For less taper, add the extra wraps only under where your lower hand sits.
  4. Apply solvent and install the grip while everything is still wet.
  5. Let it cure before you play, usually a few hours to overnight.

Not sure how many wraps you need? Start from your stock size, and if you sit on a boundary, add two wraps and feel it before committing to more.
